I've been hooked for a few years now. Just got Van Halen 2 sacd from MFSL today. Can't wait to hear it on the weekend. It definitely is pricey to listen this way but well worth it and you own it.Streaming is ok, but not even close with the quality. My biggest complaint about streaming is the audio levels are all over the place. Even on the same album from track to track. 🤬🤬🤬 Good luck with your new listening adventures. Awesome channel Ealan. Welcome to Audio Nirvana! You "Got The Taste Now"... I immensely enjoy your channel Ealan, you are very thoughtful, informative and entertaining, and your energy and passion is contagious. I confess I'm a complete nutcase aficionado of physical multichannel music, and after watching you absolutely 'Light Up' in this video I felt compelled to finally write to you. I started out "chasing extreme High Fidelity" over 46 years ago, and my journey led me to a A/V compromise Home Theater (7.2.4) with a heavy lean toward music listening. I started acquiring physical multichannel media (all formats) almost 14 years ago now, and it continues to this day. It's great fun seeing someone like yourself so enthusiastic about the experience, and realize how fantastic this endeavor can actually be. I personally sure "Got The Taste", & "The Drug" - and feel like I've reached my musical reproduction mountain top. No more chasing hardware (for the moment) just spending my time tracking down more physical media and enjoying all that I very fortunately now have. Your observations of "Clarity of Voices" - more and more instruments have "Room To Breathe" and hear "Every Nuance" are just spot on! It has been a long road of research, sweat equity, money, set-up, fine tuning, room treatments, hunting down media, and did I say money - but in the end it's so worth it! I started with a Denon Reference Universal player that could play every silver disc, and it lasted me about 12 years till it died and could not be repaired. At that time, to my amazement, there were very few options. Oppo, and Pioneer already had left the stage, and most of the few remaining weren't "Universal" and couldn't play all the formats. This led me to one of the few choices at that time - A Sony Universal player (UBP X1100 ES) with only HDMI, no 7 channel audio outputs, but it has still served me quite well. I've always kept my eye out for new players, but up until Magnetar's arrival on the scene no others have tweaked my interest. After seeing and reading other reviews and witnessing your reaction, and recommendation, I think the time might be close to me jumping on the 900. When the occasion suits it, I still stream, play my own ripped Hi Resolution files, Red Book CD's, Stereo SACD's, and very infrequently dust off a vinyl record for a spin - but when it comes time to escape and be transported to an otherworldly wondrous musical place, I chose to listen to physical multichannel discs. - Magnetar surely sent you some of the finest examples of multichannel music discs available. Just like every other medium, there are some stellar recordings and some not so much. Some albums lend themselves with their soundscapes to be fully realized in multichannel surround sound. IMHO, some of the great multichannel discs are - all Elton John's - Steely Dan (Gaucho) - all Pink Floyd's - all available ELP, - Queen (A Night at the Opera) - Toto IV - Billy Joel - all The Beatles - Deep Purple (Machine Head) - The Moody Blues - all Genesis - Tony Banks - Doobie Brothers (Quadio) - Jeff Beck's 'Blow by Blow' & 'Wired' - Santana's - and Beck's (Sea of Change). Avalon is also one of my favorites, (made of multiple soundscapes) Ealan you should give it another listen to the entire record, especially the bonus track "Always Unknowing", Brilliant! Any discs that are remixed by Steven Wilson, which include a lot of each artists catalogs of - Yes - Jethro Tull - King Crimson - Gentle Giant - Steve Hackett - and Tears For Fears. I also have a big collection of a lot of the world's finest symphonies, which makes for a truly joyous immersive musical experience. Just some of my personal tidbits - I purchased a Marantz SR 8015 that I use primarily as a processor because of it's AURO 3D capability which I use when listening in most multichannel sessions, except when it is recorded in DTS HD MSTR or DTS 96/24 then I primarily use those codecs +DSur for the rest of the channels. When I listen to stereo SACD's I found I prefer to use Dolby Audio + Dolby Surround for an immersive feel. I wish more people felt like you and me, then there would be more available content for a lot less money. Wishing you all the best in your new endeavor. No Turning Back Now!

I have 8 foot ceilings and have outlets placed about a foot from the ceiling. Would having these setup at that height work or would you suggest having the light stands and placing at near ear level?

After I completed my Home Theater build, I got the bug for a dedicated 2.1 stereo listening setup. I wanted to be able to play SACD, DVD-A, HDCD, etc., as well as DVD and blu ray DVD audio discs. I ended up getting this unicorn DVD player, the Oppo BDP-105D Darbee Edition. It's incredible, both in it's incredible reference video quality, but also two eight channel ESS SABRE 9018 DACs with one being dedicated to the analog stereo out, and the other being dedicated to the 7.1 analog out. . I have XLR stereo out going to my dedicated stereo system, and an HDMI optical cable that goes to my Home Theater AVR for multichannel audio. I highly recommend trying to source the Oppo BDP-105D Darbee Edition, it's quite an incredible piece of equipment. Most of the SACD discs have both a surround track, AND a high resolution stereo track as well (typically 24bit/192kHz).

Love this topic!! Physical media is still by far the best option out there. Started going back disc solely for the past month and the upgrade from streaming is dramatic!!!

So now you know DSD multichannel blows away Apple Spatial (Dolby Digital Plus Atmos). Next step is to rip real SACD multichannel into DSD / DSF files and play them back for ever on a Eversolo DMP A6. Billy Joel The Stranger SACD multichannel is incredible. Maybe the best out there.

The R_volution NAS does NOT rip on its own. It needs an external optical drive to work. The previous Zappiti version had the ripper built in and was/is only available outside of the US. It’s .iso files that it creates, btw.

With those up firing speakers like the ones in trhe PM 5.1.2, would it be nice if manufactures have an adjustment screw or something similar so the listener can adjust those up firing speakers to room size and layout?

people should stop wasting money build a crap 7.1.4 ,5.1.2 home theater system,you wont get good sound with same price soundbar can offer,especially when you talk about home theater ,you have more than 7~11 channel at least,and if you seperate the money the LCR is going to be weak,and if you save money from surrounds or rear or atmos,your sound stage also sucks,if you're low budge, just go for soundbar.

I have an Oppo 105d and a few of the same discs. My listening experience totally jibes with yours, especially when it comes to the Dire Straits tracks. Completely engrossing. Love your content Ealan. Always learn something and the humor makes it all the more enjoyable. Thanks!

Just upgrade about a week from 5.1.2 to 5.1.4. now looking for a movies with a bettter dynamic sound to rewatch. Can recommend 1 or 2 titles?

Welcome to the world of SACD & DVD-A!!!! I’ve sported my 5.1 set-up since around 2007 but was already involved with SACD since 2001 (DVD-A came around for me about 2010). I didn’t spend a fortune and I know my set-up doesn’t come close to being a super high end set-up but I’m still pretty happy with it. I’m also glad most of the albums I purchased was in the early days seeing how crazy many out of print titles are going for these days 🙂.

These may be duplicate suggestions as I haven’t read all the comments yet but If you can find them, I recommend getting any SACD of Erich Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra that was made by Telarc. I have the Tchaikovsky 1812, Celtic Spectacular and Epics SACD’s and they are awesome. They even have a warning on the 1812 Overture about the cannons at the end of the song. The recorded live cannon fire for it and it’s downright scary! The only thing is you have to turn the volume up past normal listening levels because if I remember correctly, the levels of the disc were 10dB down. If you like Nine Inch Nails, I highly recommend The Downward Spiral. I also highly recommend Godsmack’s The Other Side EP. It’s also a combo 2.0/5.1 SACD and the surround mix is fantastic! And I would be remiss if I didn’t recommend Dark Side of the Moon! I’m not the biggest Pink Floyd fan out there but this album is pure gold!!! For DVD-Audio I highly recommend finding Linkin Park’s Reanimation. This is a remix album of Hybrid Theory and as such has a lot of electronica. This was MADE for 5.1! The Eagles Hotel California DVD-A is a lot of fun and has a really strong bass drum. Listener beware. 😁 I will have to check my (too small) collection and see what else I can recommend!

I have Pink Floyd The Wall DVD in 5.1. I know it’s a movie but it’s a soundtrack with video. Is it the same thing?

I know exactly that feeling you describe. It's awesome and addictive. Although I have never experienced it in SACD and 5.1 surround merely 2ch streaming with Auro Upmixing.

Ealan,the ability to make music reproduction better is not the concern of the bean counters nor the hoi polloi. Streaming is good enough for all but the most discerning, and true, "you can't go home again" Check out Todd Rundgren's "Liars" on DVD Audio for a nice surround sound mix.

It's 2024, and unlike others. I still using offline way to listening music. While mine is just average, I mean MP3 highest bit rate (320 kbps), which I considered good 😅 I never see DVD Audio before, honestly 😅. I familiar with that as Movie 😅

i use a windows application to transcode sacd to a pcm experince so even with just a 5.1 atmos/dtsx soundbar as long as u have mpc-BE and a windows pc your all set

Having a very competent headphone system you can enjoy the 5.1 or stereo mixes unbelievably well. ❤

Had a Panasonic 9000, and after a year, went and bought a Magnetar 700 because couldn't live without my SACD & DVD-Audio collection. Thought I could live on Apple music alone. Nope! Like the review.

The fact that the "f" word on the album is _why_ you buy physical media. It can't be edited to not offend current audiences and it represents the artist's intent or in this case the nature of the time. Please don't apologize that physical media retains the history of the the album. Last night I listened to Bette Midler _The Devine Miss M_. What a travesty. Apparently it was re-released in 2016 with all sorts of "sweetening.". It didn't improve the album. I apparently am not able to stream the OG version of the album, so I'm very pleased that I have a physical copy in my library and a FLAC copy on my personal Plex stream.)

You are about 20 years late to the game. It was a fun time when new titles were released. I buy maybe 1 disc a year with little new content. You'll be paying a high premium for out of print titles. Now time to spin some of the discs I have that haven't been played in awhile. I enjoy your videos.

I deliberately avoid equipment that can't play multi-channel SACD. An absolute must have for me. I've been trying to build my SACD multi-channel (there are 2-channel SACDs also) library for the last half-dozen years or so. Now that the secret is out means those CDs are going to go up in price - and they're definitely not cheap now. Oddly enough, classical music on SACD is fairly popular.

I have SACD of Dire Straits Brothers in Arms and l think the 2ch Stereo version of the album from that disc sounds Great too
